In many Native communities, talking about mental health is still seen as taboo. But the Sac and Fox Nation is boldly changing that — one voice, one story, one life at a time.
Through its powerful 988 Tribal Response Campaign, the Nation is weaving together cultural pride, modern resources, and community outreach to tackle one of the most urgent issues today: mental wellness in Native communities.
🎙️ PSAs That Speak From the Heart
These aren't your average public service announcements. Featuring real members of the Sac and Fox Nation, the campaign’s new PSAs go beyond awareness — they speak directly to the soul.
“When I needed help, I thought I had to be silent. But reaching out saved my life.”
This campaign reminds us: Asking for help isn’t weakness. It’s strength rooted in tradition.
🧠 Understanding the Barriers
At the Nation’s annual powwow in June 2024, a community survey found:
-
67% said stigma or fear of judgment stopped them from seeking mental help.
-
83% said cultural connection matters in a crisis response.
These numbers reveal a deep truth: Native people are more likely to reach out when mental health care feels connected to their identity.
📞 988: More Than a Number — It’s a Lifeline
The 988 Mental Health Lifeline offers free, 24/7, confidential support via call, text, or online chat. But awareness isn’t enough — trust is key. That’s why the Sac and Fox Nation is working tirelessly to build that bridge through community events, tribal partnerships, and culturally relevant resources.
🏅 Jim Thorpe Day: Honoring Strength in Every Form
The latest wave of the campaign was launched in honor of Jim Thorpe Day — a celebration of one of the greatest Native athletes and an icon of resilience. It’s a reminder that strength doesn’t just look like medals — sometimes, it looks like asking for help.
🌟 Why This Matters
In Native communities, mental health care must go beyond clinics and crisis lines. It must honor language, history, ceremony, and tradition. That’s exactly what this campaign does — and why it’s resonating.
“988 is not just a lifeline — it’s a sign that our traditions, our voices, and our people matter.”
