Love, Lies & Legacy: Lily Gladstone Stars in Bold Reimagining of The Wedding Banquet

Lily Gladstone, fresh off her historic Oscar nomination, is back—and this time, she’s bringing heart, humor, and hard truths to a bold new retelling of Ang Lee’s 1993 queer classic, The Wedding Banquet. Directed by Andrew Ahn, this modern twist blends culture, queerness, and chosen family into one unforgettable cinematic feast.

The heart of the film centers on Min (Han Gi-Chan), a wealthy Korean artist, and his American boyfriend Chris (played by Bowen Yang). In an effort to secure Min’s inheritance and solve some thorny immigration issues, the couple concocts a plan: Min will marry Angela (Kelly Marie Tran)—a woman who, in turn, needs support for IVF treatments with her partner Lee, played by Gladstone.

But when Min’s traditional grandmother (Youn Yuh-jung) makes a surprise visit from Korea, everything begins to unravel—spectacularly.

Lily Gladstone: A Force of Grace and Grit

Lily Gladstone shines in her role as Lee

As Lee, Gladstone delivers a performance that’s both understated and emotionally charged. Her presence brings soulfulness to a film already bursting with complex intersections of culture, queerness, and personal dreams. More than just a supporting role, she becomes a grounding force—representing Indigenous voices with quiet strength.

“This isn’t just about pretending to be married. It’s about what we owe to tradition—and what we owe to ourselves.”
